Staying fit through middle age can drastically cut your risk of a panoply of chronic diseases, new research shows.
Senior-age men who have the highest levels of physical fitness have a 45-percent lower risk of all chronic diseases than those with the lowest fitness levels, while the most-fit women have a 43-percent lower risk, the study shows. In addition, fit seniors get around half as many chronic diseases as sedentary ones, and spend less of the last five years of their lives with these diseases,?CNN reported Aug. 27.
?It?s not just heart disease and just cancer ? it?s all kinds of chronic diseases,? says study co-author Jarrett Berry, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. That includes stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney disease, and Alzheimer?s, among others.
Just remember to make resistance training ? not only aerobics ? part of your daily workout routine. Muscle-building workouts can help ensure continued vitality well into your sunset years, studies show.
The study appears online in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
