Football season kicks off with Petersburg visiting GW-Danville

For much of the state, today marks the beginning of the high school football season. For most of the Central Region, however, it's just another round of two-a-days, weight lifting and studying the playbook.

While much of the Richmond area waits until after Labor Day to start the season to take advantage of greater ticket revenue, there are three games in the area tonight.

Petersburg plays the first Central Region game of the season tonight, traveling to George Washington-Danville for a 7 p.m. contest. The two teams kicked off the 2011 season in Petersburg, where the Crimson Wave won an error-filled affair 34-33.

Also at 7, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot hosts Kenston Forest. It will be the Knights' first game without Mike Henderson, the team's coach for the past 10 seasons. Also today, Louisa travels to Eastern View for a 7:30 game, and West Point hosts Chincoteague at 7.

On Saturday, Hermitage gets its national television debut. The Panthers take on Fork Union Military Academy at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

The matchup features two of the state's top players, Hermitage running back Derrick Green and Fork Union quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who committed to Penn State. For now, Hackenberg says he's firm in his commitment, though he's seeing what other options he may have in light of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Green, who was offered by 35 schools, has narrowed his choice down to six finalists: Auburn, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.

A handful of games are scheduled for next week, and a full schedule begins Sept. 7.
