1. ?Do you incorporate creativity-boosting activities into your daily routine? If so, what activities do you do?

You might wanna slap me for saying this, but I feel like everything I do centers around doing it creatively. I?ve built my business on writing and making videos and speaking and playing my pink ukulele?so every time I decide to work on something, I think about what I want to express and how. I wrote/filmed/edited a music video for?my communty site.

When I put my career change exercises into?workbook?form, I decided to make the whole freakin? thing (yes, all 50+ pages) rhyme.

When I offered?An Effective Escape: Leaving Your Day Job Without Living in Your Parents? Basement?for the first time, it was as a virtual workshop. I?m usually doing something around speaking, singing, or writing? but not in a do-a-creative-exercise-every-day way.

2. ?What are your inspirations for your work?

It depends on what I?m working on, but the things that are popping into my head? Dr. Seuss,?Cee Lo Green,?Garfunkel & Oates, Cee Lo Green, stuff from my childhood (I so wanna write a Choose Your Own Adventure Book!), Jessica Swift, Color Me Katie, Danielle LaPorte, Alexandra Franzen, my clients, Broadway?.oh, I?ll stop there now.

3.?There are many culprits that can crush creativity, such as distractions, self-doubt and fear of failure. What tends to stand in the way of your creativity?

The Comparison Vampire! Oh, I call the voices we have in our heads that suck the good stuff outta us Vampires, and The Comparison Vampire tends to be the worst of all.

Look at how professional?her?videos are. Look at how perfect?his copy is. Blech. It makes you wanna just throw in the towel and never write another word or speak another sentence or pluck another tune ever again.

4.?How do you overcome these obstacles?

I think a big part of it is being confident and authentic in what you?re doing. Sure, his copy might be ?perfect? and her videos might be ?professional,? but mine are 100 percent Michelle at all times, and I?m proud of what I produce.

I?m all there, singing or speaking or writing my heart out, and I?m confident that what I put out into the world represents my uniquity, my perspective, and my knowledge. Let?s face it: They?re not better than you, They?re?different. Two separate things.

5. ?What are some of your favorite resources on creativity?

Anything that Keri Smith puts out is worth picking up and working through. It looks easy on the surface to follow her exercises (i.e. smear food on this page of the book, tie a string around the book and take it for a walk, etc.), but actually confronts our Vampires and can be a great (yet scary!) learning experience.

I also recommend the Right Brain Business Plan?to any and all creative entrepreneurs (I have one!), aspiring or otherwise. The Artist in the Office is also a must for those of us barely surviving our day jobs, and nothing beats The Artist?s Way for tapping into your inner creative.

6. ?What is your favorite way to get your creative juices flowing?

For writing, I keep tons of images with inspiring sayings on a Pinterest board, and that?ll be my first stop if I need something to write about. For my songs, I tend to have an idea as to what I wanna sing about (it?s recently been about my?boob cancer, oddly enough), and then rhymes come to me on the subway, when I?m about to fall asleep, or in the shower. I always have my iPhone handy to take notes.

7. ?What?s your advice for readers on cultivating creativity?

Don?t wait for lightening to strike or the perfect moment where inspiration knocks you over ? because it often doesn?t happen that way. Instead, show up to do the work and start wherever feels easiest.

Sometimes I start a blog post in the middle because the beginning just won?t come to me. Sometimes I write a song with the chorus leading the way because the verses are elusive. Do something every day for a small bite of time (yes, you can?get a lot accomplished in 15 minutes a day, thankyouverymuch) and you?ll be able to have a tangible product in no time.

Also, don?t be married to the format. Sometimes I know I need to write a blog post, but writing feels hard in that moment?so I make a video instead. Pay attention to what feels fun and easy at the time, and know if you move forward with that it?s not cheating.

8. ?Anything else you?d like readers to know about creativity?

Wanna know a secret? You?re creative. You might not believe me, but it?s true! We all have it in us?just start believing that I?m talking to you when I mention ?creative people,? start exploring in a fun and easy way, and you?ll be able to own that title more than you think!

Warning signs seen before actor's violent end

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.

The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.

They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.

Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.

Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.

The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.

By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.

A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."

Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."

Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.

"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."

He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."

He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:

"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

Be Aware that Closed Things Open

On the first Thursday of the semester, thousands of students, teachers, staff, and guests explored the campus for Columbia Crawl, the college?s annual art crawl. I was asked to participate by my department, and the task was to create an interactive poetry center that would be open to anyone attending the crawl. Thinking as a teacher, this meant to me that the activity had to be accessible and flexible for a variety of age groups and learning abilities. Thinking as an artist, I wanted to give the participants of the art crawl something visual to manipulate that would inform their writing. I started pouring through my teaching resource books, the majority of which are relatively unconventional titles. A spark of an idea came to me from the book How to Be an Explorer of the World, an excellent activity book that asks you to use the world around you as a portable museum from which to conduct investigations. Not all of it is appropriate for grade school level students, but oftentimes books like this offer accessible and transferable ways to tackle deep concepts. The activity that particularly caught my eye involved collecting paint chips from the hardware store and renaming the colors by matching them to colors that make up your world.

The Paint Chips

I decided that my poetry center would focus on connecting color to memory and using that to inspire the topic of the writing. I asked the participants to look through the paint chips and select one that sparked, ?a memory of an object, a place, or a person.? After they had selected their color, I suggested they give the color a new name that reflected their memory. Once that task was complete, I asked them to write a poem that connected the color and the memory together.

The Dean's Office Visits

Because I am a tactile learner at heart and wanted to include some constructivism in the task, I also gave the participants the option of using newspapers collected around campus to inform their poem. This task was more open-ended and allowed them to decide if they wanted to use an image, a word, a sentence, or a series of words cut out that they felt fit together. Many of the visitors to the center combined the two activities together to create some compelling pieces of art and writing.

I was surprised by the amount of visitors we had over the evening, including the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dr. Deborah Holdstein. I had never met her before, but found her to be very charismatic, thoughtful, and witty. Her poem reflected on memories from Kindergarten art class. Some members of the Art Education cohort, including Ashley Saunders, also came through to make poetry with me. We also saw representatives from the undergrad early childhood education program and from my own cohort. Overall, it was an excellent experience and one that helped me think through a project for a wide variety of people.

Frank Schaeffer: Prince of the Scorn Merchants

I?ve written before on the hot market for scorn of conservative evangelicals. ?The immediate provocation was a post from Rachel Held Evans which was unfair, I thought, to evangelicals who oppose gay marriage, but I tried to make clear that Rachel is a minor and periodic offender. ?Compared to the strains of scorn one finds every now and then in her writing, there are other writers who offer a veritable symphony of scorn and disgust and paranoia when conservative evangelicals are under discussion.

One such scorn artist is Frank Schaeffer. ?He published a shameful screed against?Christianity Today?after the magazine published a negative review of a film ??Hellbound? ? made by his friend, Kevin Miller. ?I don?t say ?shameful? lightly. ?I try to avoid terms like that. ?But he, truly, should be ashamed of what he wrote. ?He won?t be. ?But he should be.

Recognize first that Frank Schaeffer ? son of conservative Christian intellectual icon Francis Schaeffer, founder of L?Abri and author of several influential books on faith and culture ? has deep, complex and undisclosed personal relationships here. ?It?s not my place to disclose them, so I won?t, but it?s worth noting that Frank does not disclose them either. ?He grew up in the company of Christian leaders, many of them in the publishing world. ?There are countless untold stories here of the people he has burned ? including some currently at Christianity Today?? as he has grown increasingly radical in his rejection of anything resembling an evangelical orthodoxy and ?establishment.? ?It?s not a flattering metaphor, and I apologize for that, but Frank is like a wounded bear that attacks anyone who vaguely resembles the person that hurt him. ?You feel for the bear, because you know he is hurt and has lost his way. ?On the other hand, you cannot stand idly by and let the bear maul the innocents.

At some point, Frank concluded that conservative evangelicalism is a stain on the face of planet Earth, and he began to hate it. ?If you think I?m being too strong here, read what he wrote.

He refers to CT?s staff as ?keepers of the flame of second-rate Christianity,? the ?gatekeepers of the smug evangelical world.? ?Although?CT is actually closer to the center than many evangelical publications, Frank calls it a ?little obscure?rag on the Christian right.? ?Of the reviewer, Mark Galli, Frank writes: ?Overall I would say Mark Galli is really upset he wasn?t interviewed. This review sounds a lot like a ?What about me?? protest. ?Then he re-writes a sentence from Galli to read thus:???It never seems to have occurred to the filmmaker that there are thoughtful, careful, irenic evangelicals like ME, like ME who even wrote a book on this and who is editor of a VERY IMPORTANT magazine filled with VERY ?SERIOUS articles on a pretend world by people LIKE ME who believe in hell and may have some pretty strong reasons for doing so and have?PhD s?and everything in Hell Studies and all??

He alleges that Galli sought to ?cash in? on the discussion around hell that Rob Bell provoked ? and yet Frank has written on any number of controversial issues as well. ?Was he seeking to ?cash in?? ?Galli?s book has mostly positive reviews on Amazon (3.4 out of 5 stars, which is pretty strong for a book defending an unpopular position), but of course Frank only quotes a one-star anonymous review that complains about Galli?s writing style. ?He describes the book tendentiously as seeking ?to defend the evangelical establishment view of a literal hell, say the kind of hell all those Jews gassed in WWII went to seconds after they died because ?they never ?accepted Jesus.??

In the even more furious and flailing version of the essay he published on Huffington Post, he calls CT ?pro-hell, pro-damnation, pro-retribution.? ?When some readers object to his tone, his answer is essentially ?put on your big-boy pants? and he calls Christianity Today ?a multi-million dollar organisation of bullies picking on one brave film maker.?

This has to be called what it is: childish and shameful. ?There is nothing loving, nothing gracious, nothing redemptive about Frank?s tone here.

Frank?s first objection is that Galli is not ?disinterested.? ?Galli wrote a book responding to the Rob Bell?Love Wins?brouhaha. ?Frank alleges it?s some kind of journalistic malpractice to have a non-disinterested observer review the movie. ?Yet it?s actually very common to have, say, a?famed atheist review a book by a famed theist, or a representative of one point of view reviewing a representative of another point of view. ?It makes for more interesting reading and more meaningful debate. ?And is Frank himself, a friend of the filmmaker, not biased as well? ?The question is whether the criticisms have merit, not whether you have a personal opinion on the matter.

One of Galli?s criticisms is that the film never features a credible theological defense of the traditional view of hell ? and instead starts with, and returns several times to, the Westboro Baptist bigots as representatives of the side that believes in a literal hell. ?Frank writes:

If the author of the review hadn?t been so blinded by theological bias he would have taken time to reflect on why the filmmaker would have begun with such an obvious caricature of the Infernalist position. ?Rather than portray it as the norm, Miller gets the audience engaged by despising something of which no one would approve, eventually bringing them around to see that what the ?clean-cut? Reformed folks believe about hell ? like the the editors of?Christianity Today?and professional theologian-pastors-celebrities,?like Mark Driscoll and Kevin DeYoung? is the same as the extremists, only the packaging is different. The theology is exactly the same: God loves some people and hates others.

Yet that?s precisely the worry. ?Rather than representing both sides of the debate fairly, the intention of the film is to eliminate the meaningful distinctions between Westboro Baptist extremists and more thoughtful, moderate non-universalists. ?The theology is?not?exactly the same. ?And if the film had included a credible theologian defending a more traditional view of hell, this would have been evident.

What Galli is expressing is the same frustration that many theologically conservative evangelicals felt in the midst of the Bell?s Hell debate. ?If Bell wants to be something like a universalist, or assert that the unsaved will have all of eternity to save their minds, fine. ?I personally hold to what Barth called the ?pious hope? that God will redeem all things in the end. ?But even I found Bell?s book deeply problematic. ?It was the rampant caricaturing of an orthodox view of hell, the complete failure to deal with a theologically serious version of it, that was so sorely lacking.

Finally,?Frank calls Galli?s review a ?defensive self-serving hatchet job? ? and yet Frank ? the Hatchet-Man of the Religious Left ? is writing a complete hatchet job against Galli and CT as a way of defending his friend?s movie. ?The lack of self-awareness here is troublesome. ?We should all beware how we can become mirror versions of the ghosts we condemn. ?Frank was once a part of the Christian Right establishment, and then turned against what he saw as hateful and irrational and condemning. ?Yet now Frank is hateful and irrational and condemning ? and just standing on the opposite side of the gulf. ?He?s a scorn merchant. ?His career ? his writing online, his books, his television personality ? is about scorning the Religious Right. ?Want someone to trash the Religious Right? ?Call Frank Schaeffer. ?He?s trading in his hatred for money and notoriety.

But it?s okay, because now he hates the true bad guys. ?He?s sure of it this time.

Frank has lost his way. ?I truly hope he finds it again. ?He can stand for all the things he believes in, and yet do it with integrity and grace. ?He may not be asked to MSNBC as often, but at least he?ll be consistent with the values he espouses.

Wash Bras and Other Delicates in a Salad Spinner to Protect Them from Wear and Tear [Clever Uses]

The humble salad spinner is great for washing leaves of lettuce without bruising them, but according to Busty Girl Comics, a blog that chronicles the issues that come with being large-chested, it's also a great tool for cleaning bras that can easily get mangled in the washing machine.

Anyone who's shopped for bras or shopped for bras for a partner knows that those things can get pretty expensive, so it makes sense to take care of them so they'll last as long as possible. Apparently, all you need for a gentle wash is soap made for delicate items, like lingerie soap or baby shampoo, some warm water, and a salad spinner dedicated to the task. You can probably figure out the rest, but according to the reaction at Tumblr, it works like a charm, and other hand-wash delicates clean up nicely in a salad spinner as well. You can also pick up fabric bags to protect your delicates in the wash, but we can appreciate the ingenuity of this tip.

Wall Street declines as European debt fears heat up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as renewed turbulence in the euro zone over financial bailouts led investors to book profits from recent gains as a strong third quarter nears an end.

Violent protests in Madrid against expected austerity measures and growing talk of secession in Catalonia increased pressure on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy as he maneuvers before asking euro zone policymakers for rescue money.

Meanwhile, Greece faced its biggest anti-austerity protest in more than a year as international lenders admitted to difficulty in working out how to solve Athens' debt crisis.

"There is still a real risk that Europe has to make some decisions that could hold the market together ... over the next few weeks as it relates to Greece and certainly Spain," said T. Doug Dale, chief investment officer for Security Ballew in Jackson, Mississippi.

"There are still enough unknowns out there that it doesn't take a whole lot to get the S&P back off."

The Dow Jones industrial average shed 11.25 points, or 0.08 percent, to 13,446.30. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.06 points, or 0.42 percent, to 1,435.53. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 26.02 points, or 0.83 percent, to 3,091.71.

The S&P 500 is up more than 5 percent for the third quarter and nearly 2 percent for September, historically a weak month for equities, largely due to actions taken by the U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank to prop up their economies.

But the benchmark index has fallen 1.8 percent since the Fed's most recent stimulus plan on September 13 as earnings warnings from bellwethers such as FedEx Corp and Caterpillar Inc have sparked concerns about global growth.

Jabil Circuit tumbled 9.3 percent to $19.01 after the technology company reported fourth-quarter earnings that missed expectations and forecast weak first-quarter results.

Investors' sentiment was reflected in the session's best performing sectors, which were defensive plays such as utilities, telecoms and consumer staples.

Longer term, the equity outlook is positive. While the S&P 500 isn't expected to move much from its current level through to the end of the year, according to a Reuters poll of analysts, it is seen advancing in the first half of 2013, largely on central bank actions.

Stocks fell despite a government report that prices of new U.S. single-family home sales vaulted to their highest level in more than five years in August.

American Greetings Corp jumped 13.5 percent to $16.27 after the company said it received an offer to go private from a group led by its chief executive, valuing the greetings card company at about $580 million.

Yahoo Inc new Chief Executive Marissa Mayer laid out goals for the Internet company in her first company wide address Tuesday and chose a new chief financial officer. Shares slipped 0.3 percent to $15.63.

Meet the man who gave the Mars rover its eyes

Iconic pictures from the latest mission to the Red Planet are coming courtesy of space imaging expert Michael Malin

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater, which contains Mount Sharp, in early August and stunning images followed. Any favourites?
My favourite from the early days is the heat shield view we released as Curiosity descended. I think that will become an iconic image, just as the Saturn V second-stage and trans-stage separations are famous images of the Apollo era.

Beyond aesthetics, what use are the images?
Using MARDI - the Mars Descent Imager, which took photos of the ground below as the rover landed - I've done what I personally wanted, which was to position the rover very accurately. I also want to make a high-definition video of the landing, smoothing out the jerkiness of four frames per second to a smoother 30 frames per second using optical flow techniques. For Mastcam - the twin cameras on the rover's head, about 2 metres off the ground - my interests are in how the ground got to look the way it does; I'm interested in the processes involved in eroding Mount Sharp.

What can the Mastcam images tell us about how the ground got to look the way it does?
That is the essence of geomorphology. I can't really answer this question in the absence of data, which we have just started to receive. An example might be as follows: we have not yet seen any sand ripples at the place the rover landed, but there are large sand dunes only a few kilometres away. Why aren't there ripples near the rover? Is there no sand moving there, or does it move so quickly it doesn't leave a trace? We don't know but we will keep our eyes open for evidence as we do our research.

What drew you to planetary geology?
Geologists are very lucky, we get to look at beautiful things and figure out how they got to be that beautiful. Such understanding can be used to capture and preserve the beauty for posterity, and to enrich people's enjoyment of these things through better understanding. When I tell people I'm a geologist, they are often full of questions about, and enthusiasm for, what I do. When I tell them I study the geology of Mars, their interest increases. What excites me is solving the mysteries I encounter in how planets work.

There was originally a plan to install zoom cameras, a project involving film-maker James Cameron. Did you want cinematic footage?
We did not intend to take too many sequences not really oriented towards science or engineering, but if we had flown the zoom-lens cameras, I believe we would have taken some more dramatic, cinematic scenes to illustrate the excitement of Mars exploration. This may still be possible with the cameras that flew, but it will be much harder.

Is there any tension between the scientific and public-engagement uses of the cameras?
I am pleased to have the public excited about my experiments and Mars. But I am not happy with NASA HQ requiring me to put out raw images to the public in near-real time, without commentary or context. I think we can engage the public better.

Turbulence Training: New Workout and Health Research

Today I'm going to urge you swap some of your TV watching for short, burst workouts. First, the bad news.

"TV viewing time may be associated with a loss of life similar to other risk factors such as physical inactivity & obesity...On average, every single hour of TV viewed after the age of 25 reduces the viewer's life expectancy by 21.8 minutes." - http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/46/13/927.abstract?etoc

Okay, that's not good. But this is.

And it might be the most interesting ? and shocking ? workout study ever.

Crazy Canadian researchers at Queen's University (my sister's alma mater) tested a Turbulence Training style workout against long cardio. (Reference: Appl Physiol Nutr Metab. 2012 Sep 20.)

22 college-aged women did 4 workouts per week for 4 weeks in one of three groups.

Group A did 30 minutes of treadmill running at 85% max heart rate

Group B did 8 rounds of 20 seconds of a single exercise (burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, or squat thrusts) with 10 seconds of rest between rounds.

Group C did nothing (they were the non-training control group).

Results:
Both training groups increased their aerobic fitness levels by the SAME amount (about 7-8%). That's right, the short bodyweight workouts (of 4 minutes) worked just as well as 30 minutes of cardio. Shocking.

BUT?only Group B, the TT style training, also increased muscular endurance in common exercises like chest presses, leg extensions, sit-ups, and push-ups.

And finally, the TT style training used by Group B also resulted in greater overall workout enjoyment.

The Crazy Canadian Scientists concluded that "extremely low volume bodyweight interval-style training" will boost cardiovascular fitness just as well as cardio while giving you BETTER improvements in muscle endurance. All in just 4 minutes.

So swap out some TV watching for bodyweight circuits at home. For a complete plan, use my simple secret circuits here:
