TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?This election season, there is one thing that isn't partisan. Recent research indicates that intimacy enhancement products, like Masque Sexual Flavors (http://www.yourmasque.com) have been selling particularly well in socially conservative states like Montana and North Dakota, in addition to states that might more typically be considered natural markets.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111228/FL26208LOGO )
"Recent research from Adam & Eve indicates that Americans spend more than $15 billion annually on sex toys and that the states with the most sex toy purchases per person are those generally considered socially conservative," says Michael Guilfoyle, President of Masque. "While this may be true for some intimacy enhancement companies, Masque's sales are highest in states like Texas, New York, California and Massachusetts, proving that intimacy enhancement products appeal to a wide range of individuals in various geographic locations."
The states that top the charts in terms of sex toy sales are Wyoming, Alaska and North Dakota.? The research also found that married women are purchasing sex toys and intimacy enhancement products at twice the rate of single women.
"There is an assumption that single women or individuals in more socially liberal states would be more likely to purchase intimacy enhancement products," explains Guilfoyle. "It's clear that women, regardless of their socio-economic status, political beliefs or relationship status are buying products that bring them closer to their partners and help them explore their sexuality.? This reinforces our belief that committed couples are looking for ways to increase the intimacy of their relationships."
As seen in the pages of Redbook, Women's Health and Cosmo, Masque Sexual Flavors is the first oral sex strip that dissolves on the tongue, blocking the salts, proteins and bitter tastes sometimes associated with oral sex on a man and helping improve the overall experience for both partners. Designed with couples in mind, Masque aims to increase intimacy between partners and encourage sexual exploration.?
Masque is available in watermelon, mango, strawberry and chocolate flavors. The oral sex strips can be purchased on the company's website, www.yourmasque.com, on Amazon.com or at select retailers for $9.95 per pack. Each pack contains three individually-wrapped gel strips.
About Masque
Based in Tampa, Fla., Masque Sexual Flavors is the first oral sex product of its kind, developed to neutralize the tastes associated with oral sex on a man.? TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney may have a bigger problem than his low likability and favorability ratings. Even among voters who support him, many say he will lose to President Barack Obama.
Pollsters say that's a serious handicap that deserves more notice than it's receiving. Republican image-makers, focused on trying to make Romney seem warmer, might be wiser to try to make him more plausible ? as a commander in chief and as a politician who can defeat a seasoned campaigner like Obama.
Americans like winners, pollsters say. The "who do you THINK will win" question has a strong ? but certainly not infallible ? track record of signaling where an election is going.
The numbers are startling. Poll after poll shows Obama and Romney roughly even when people are asked the "horse race" question: who do you support for president? But Romney trails Obama badly when the same people are asked: Who do you believe will win?
This by no means assures Obama of victory. And there's plenty of time for the numbers to shift as confidence in Romney's chances grows. For now, however, veteran Republican pollsters say Romney's team should be concerned.
"If I could know only one thing in a campaign's home stretch, that's what I'd want to know," GOP pollster Mike McKenna said of the likely winner question. "It's a barometer of the real mood out there."
"That question gives a sense of the enthusiasm, turnout, last-minute volunteers and fundraising" that are likely to materialize, McKenna said.
Another GOP pollster, Steve Lombardo, agrees. "It reflects where the race is," he said of Obama's advantage on the who's-likely-to-win question.
"As much as people want to believe the race is tied," Lombardo said, Obama has an edge, at least for now. People who support a certain candidate, he said, "are less likely to go to the polls if they don't think their candidate can win."
Lombardo and McKenna say they expect Romney to narrow the "who will win" gap with Obama, and this week's nominating convention should help.
Lombardo said Romney needs to shrink his disadvantage to single digits.
He has a ways to go.
A recent AP-GfK poll found Romney and Obama essentially tied on the question of who they would vote for if the election were held today. But 57 percent of voters say Obama will win in November, while 33 percent think he will lose.
A May poll by Gallup found 56 percent of Americans predicting an Obama win, and 36 percent picking Romney.
Pollsters say no pre-election question is a foolproof predictor of an election's outcome. Despite popular perceptions, the ubiquitous who-would-win-today question is not meant to predict Election Day results, but rather is "a snapshot in time," as pollsters say.
The less-frequently asked "who do you think will win" question is somewhat different, said Andrew Kohut, veteran pollster for the Pew Research Center. "Its record for predicting is pretty good," he said, even if the reasons are not entirely clear.
Polling history supports his view. A mid-August 2008 poll for CBS News and The New York Times found that 48 percent of Americans thought Obama would win the election, and 34 percent named John McCain. Obama won, 53 percent to 46.
In August 2004, the Pew Research Center found that 44 percent thought George W. Bush would win, and 37 percent named John Kerry. Bush won the November election with 51 percent of the vote.
The 2000 election supports arguments both for and against the "who will win" question's ability to predict presidential results. A CBS News poll found that 47 percent of Americans expected Bush to win, compared to 33 percent for Al Gore. Gore won the popular vote that fall, but Bush won the Electoral College vote, and thus the White House.
In August polls in 1992 and 1996, Americans correctly predicted Bill Clinton's wins over incumbent George H.W. Bush and challenger Bob Dole, respectively. In August 1988, a poll similarly found confidence in Bush's eventual win over Michael Dukakis.
"Any indicator that has been as reliable as this, for whatever reason, has to be taken seriously," Kohut said.
It's impossible to read voters' minds. But the combination of low faith in Romney's ability to defeat Obama and his relatively low favorability ratings suggests he has yet to persuade most Americans he is cut from presidential timber.
There's ample time to remedy that. And, of course, the weak economy might sink Obama without Romney having to raise his popularity.
Romney's camp undoubtedly wants to use the convention's remaining hours ? especially his Thursday night acceptance speech ? to burnish his likability and plausibility. There's work to do.
Most registered voters viewed Romney unfavorably when the convention opened, a recent Washington Post poll found. He is the first party nominee with higher unfavorable than favorable ratings at this stage since Walter Mondale, the 1984 Democratic choice.
In the same poll, 61 percent said Obama was more "friendly" and "likable" than Romney; 27 percent saw it the other way around.
Several Republican strategists said they are not terribly worried about Americans' predictions of the Nov. 6 winner.
"That data fails to measure the intensity that voters bring to the table," which favors Republicans, said veteran consultant Terry Holt. "Romney still has to close the sale, but he's still got plenty of time."
Holt added: "I'd be more concerned if it were two or three days before the election."
Millions of Americans will tune in Thursday night for Romney's acceptance speech. Aside from the three October debates with Obama, it will probably mark his best chance to start closing the plausibility gap.

Staying fit through middle age can drastically cut your risk of a panoply of chronic diseases, new research shows.
Senior-age men who have the highest levels of physical fitness have a 45-percent lower risk of all chronic diseases than those with the lowest fitness levels, while the most-fit women have a 43-percent lower risk, the study shows. In addition, fit seniors get around half as many chronic diseases as sedentary ones, and spend less of the last five years of their lives with these diseases,?CNN reported Aug. 27.
?It?s not just heart disease and just cancer ? it?s all kinds of chronic diseases,? says study co-author Jarrett Berry, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. That includes stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney disease, and Alzheimer?s, among others.
Just remember to make resistance training ? not only aerobics ? part of your daily workout routine. Muscle-building workouts can help ensure continued vitality well into your sunset years, studies show.
The study appears online in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Thousands were stuck in line in Newark airport Tuesday afternoon, after United Airlines experienced a system-wide computer outage.
Thousands of United Airlines passengers are?experiencing?flight delays and long lines nationwide after the system-wide network outage took the airline offline for at least two hours on Tuesday.
The Chicago-based airline confirmed the computer troubles on their official Twitter and Facebook pages Tuesday afternoon: "We have a network outage and are working to get systems back online. We'll update soon."
The FAA had ground stops for in-bound United flights at Newark, San Francisco and Houston airports, but it was later lifted.
"UAL's computer went down," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. "It's back up ... but the delays we're seeing are absolutely a United problem, not an ATC (air traffic control) issue."
Thousands of passengers were stuck in line at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon, according to NBC News' Jason White, who was among the mass of travelers waiting in line.
The outage of the "SHARES" system affects things like reservations, ticketing and check-ins, which is critical for?boarding?passengers. The system is carried over from Continental Airlines. United adopted the reservation platform on March 3.
The airline's website was also down for a temporary period, but is now running again.
In a statement, United Airlines said it "is in the process of resuming normal operations following a temporary network outage that affected its airports and website Tuesday afternoon."
The carrier said it "apologizes for the disruption caused to travelers at affected airports," and is allowing customers on affected flights to cancel or rebook their itineraries without penalty.

CLEVELAND (AP) ? A group of Amish men and women accused of hate crimes in hair-cutting attacks took action out of concern that members of their religion were straying from their beliefs, defense attorneys said Tuesday.
Attorneys for the defendants didn't deny that the hair cuttings took place. Instead, they argued that the Amish are bound by different rules guided by their religion and that the government shouldn't get involved in what amounted to a family or church dispute.
At the center of the trial, which opened this week in federal court, are the rules of a religion that distances itself from the outside world and yields to a collective order as opposed to the laws of society. "These are religious separatists," said Ed Bryan, the attorney for the group's accused ringleader.
Prosecutors say the attacks were motivated solely by religious disagreements between Amish bishops and a breakaway group in eastern Ohio that attacked mainstream members five times last fall by cutting off their beards and hair, which carry spiritual significance in the faith.
"Every one of these attacks targeted those symbols of Amish righteousness," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan.
The group spent months planning the attacks, she said.
She described how sons pulled their father out of bed and chopped off his beard in the moonlight, and how women surrounded their mother-in-law and cut off two feet of her hair, taking it down to the scalp in some places.
In the final attack, a man and his wife lured his parents to their farm, Brennan said. Once there, the older man's grandsons held him down while his son cut his hair, she said.
Some of the victims and others from the community will testify against their relatives.
The 16 people on trial live in a settlement near the West Virginia panhandle. All but one is related to the accused ringleader, Sam Mullet Sr., who sat rigidly in court with a beard hanging down to the middle of his chest. He wore a plain shirt with suspenders as did all the Amish men. The women wore white bonnets.
The defendants have rejected plea bargain offers and could face lengthy prison terms if convicted.
Prosecutors say those who were targeted in the attacks were people who left the settlement over disagreements with Mullet's authoritarian methods. Others were bishops who had intervened in Mullet's decision to excommunicate several members. The bishops agreed the excommunications weren't consistent with Amish teachings and decided not to recognize the penalties, which angered Mullet and inspired the attacks, prosecutors said.
Mullet's attorney said he never ordered the hair cuttings and can't believe that what happened amounts to a hate crime.
"What he's saying is these are personal, family disputes" Bryan said.
Some of the defense attorneys said their clients were motivated by anger at their parents over how they were raised and the lingering bitterness. Another attorney said one of the defendants, Lester Miller, took part in the hair cuttings of his parents because he felt they had strayed from their religion.
"He thought his parents had forgotten their roots," attorney Dean Carro said. "His intention was to take a symbolic step."
Brennan said some suspects kept the hair they cut, and one defendant took along a disposable camera to take pictures. Prosecutors presented one photo to jurors, saying it showed one of the suspects grabbing Raymond Hershberger, an Amish bishop who had voiced concern about Mullet, on the night five people broke into his house and cut his beard with shears.
That same night, the group cut the hair of another bishop after grabbing him by his beard and dragging him out of his home, Brennan said.
The group hired a driver to take them to the homes, she said. All of the suspects are members of the "Old Order Amish," meaning they don't own electrical appliances and automobiles or believe in divorce.
Investigators later discovered one of the suspects had hidden the camera that contained photos from that evening, Brennan said. It was under a tree on Mullet's farm.
"They wanted to see the trophies they collected," she said.
Defense attorneys said none of the hair cuttings was meant to hurt anybody even though prosecutors said some of the Amish targeted suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries.
"The aim is not to hurt the person," attorney Gary Levine said. "The aim is to bring them back to the community."
Brennan said that several defendants admitted their roles and that Mullet didn't participate in the attacks but helped plan them.
"Sam Mullet was at the beginning and the end of all of these attacks," she said.
Mullet has said he didn't order the hair-cutting but didn't stop anyone from carrying it out.

PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona voters headed to the polls Tuesday to settle an unexpectedly feisty Republican U.S. Senate primary battle marked by accusations of hypocrisy, broken promises and flip-flopping.
Six-term U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake and wealthy businessman Wil Cardon were the front-runners vying for the GOP nomination to replace retiring Sen. Jon Kyl.
Tuesday's Arizona elections also would oust of one of two Republican House members, both freshmen pitted against each other by redistricting. Five other House incumbents, including former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' hand-picked successor, faced challengers.
Voters in Alaska, Oklahoma and Vermont also were deciding House races.
In Oklahoma, Westville plumbing company owner Markwayne Mullin defeated three-term state Rep. George Faught in a runoff for the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Dan Boren. And longtime state and federal prosecutor Rob Wallace, of Fort Gibson, beat Muskogee seed company owner Wayne Herriman in the Democratic runoff.
Windsor businessman John MacGovern handily defeated a Republican primary opponent in the Vermont race to challenge independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in November.
And five Democrats in Alaska were vying for the chance to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young, who has held his seat for 40 years. Young had two challengers but was expected to easily win his primary.
In Arizona, Democrats were hoping the surprisingly aggressive ? and expensive ? challenge from Cardon to Flake, who was widely seen as the favorite in the race, will give them their best shot in years at taking one of the state's two Senate seats.
A push by moderate Democrat Richard Carmona, a former surgeon general under President George W. Bush, comes as the GOP is fighting to pick up four more seats to wrest control of the chamber in advance of votes on key policy issues such as the possible repeal of President Barack Obama's health care law and changes to the tax code.
Arizona hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since Dennis DeConcini won his third term in 1988, but Democrats are hoping the primary attacks on Flake have weakened his standing and his bank account.
"Jeff Flake has been a little wounded by the primary," said Jim Pederson, a former Democratic Party chairman who lost an expensive race to Kyl six years ago. "I think a lot of the issues that Wil brought up will kind of resonate with people. I think (the general election) is going to be very close."
Cardon spent $6 million of his own money trying to paint Flake as a Washington insider who reneged on past promises to limit his terms in office. Opponents pointed to Flake's little-known past as a Washington lobbyist for a uranium mine that was minority-owned by Iran. He also criticized Flake, saying he made a dramatic change on immigration, going from a supporter of comprehensive reform to backing policies that would first secure the border.
For his part, Cardon was accused of painting himself as tough on immigration, while a company he partly owned was fined for faulty paperwork in hiring workers with questionable legal status.
Cardon was widely seen as having begun to cede the race in the past month, turning positive in his campaign messages and ending months of expensive television ads.
One or both major parties had primary races in all nine of Arizona's U.S. House districts, including the two-incumbent rivalry between freshman Republican Reps. Ben Quayle and David Schweikert in the 6th Congressional District centered on the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale. Quayle moved into the district ? the bulk of which he previously represented ? after redistricting put him in a neighboring district considered more competitive with Democrats.
Barber, a former aide to Giffords, was elected in June to serve out her term after she resigned to concentrate on her recovery from being shot in the head during a January 2011 mass shooting in Tucson. He faced a challenge from Democrat Matt Heinz, a former state representative.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly, says a new study that includes a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Taking aspirin is associated with a lower risk of death from prostate cancer, especially in men with high risk disease, according to a multicenter study published in the August 28 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Kevin Choe, assistant professor of radiation oncology at UT Southwestern, is first author of the paper.
Preclinical studies have shown that aspirin and other anticoagulation medications may inhibit cancer growth and metastasis, but clinical data have been limited previously. The study looked at almost 6,000 men in the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor (CaPSURE) database who had prostate cancer treated with surgery or radiotherapy.
About 2,200 of the men involved -- 37 percent -- were receiving anticoagulants (warfarin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, and/or aspirin). The risk of death from prostate cancer was compared between those taking anticoagulants and those who were not.
The findings demonstrated that 10-year mortality from prostate cancer was significantly lower in the group taking anticoagulants, compared to the non-anticoagulant group -- 3 percent versus 8 percent, respectively. The risks of cancer recurrence and bone metastasis also were significantly lower. Further analysis suggested that this benefit was primarily derived from taking aspirin, as opposed to other types of anticoagulants.
The suggestion that aspirin, a frequently prescribed and relatively well-tolerated medication, may improve outcomes in prostate cancer is of particular interest, Dr. Choe said, since prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men and the second-leading cancer killer in the U.S.
"The results from this study suggest that aspirin prevents the growth of tumor cells in prostate cancer, especially in high-risk prostate cancer, for which we do not have a very good treatment currently," Dr. Choe said. "But we need to better understand the optimal use of aspirin before routinely recommending it to all prostate cancer patients."
Other scientists involved with the study include Janet Cowan, Drs. June Chan, and Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco; Dr. Anthony D'Amico of Harvard University; and senior author Dr. Stanley Liauw of the University of Chicago.

But chocolate wasn?t always my friend; and this is coming from someone who could easily woof down four Milky Way bars in a day. ?Back then, it was a matter of increasing my exercise, giving up a food group, or a combination of both to maintain a steady weight loss. Obviously, not healthy and definitely poor nutrition.
Most of us go through a learning process when we are changing our lifestyles and I?m no different. ?Because I knew I never would give chocolate up for good, I decided to learn what I could about it. ?To see if their was a healthier option. ?And there is?

?Besides epicatechin, cacao is also high in?resveratrol, a potent antioxidant found in red wine, known for its ability to cross your blood-brain barrier to help protect your nervous system.?
?One 2012 meta-analysis found that?eating chocolate?could slash your risk of cardiovascular disease by 37 percent and your stroke risk by 29 percent. Another 2012 meta-analysis, this one in the UK1, found that cocoa/chocolate lowered insulin resistance, reduced blood pressure, increased blood vessel elasticity, and slightly reduced LDL.?
You may already know that the closer the chocolate is to it?s natural state, the better it is for you. ?Unfortunately, most of us can?t stand the bitter taste. ?It?s what we add to cocoa that makes a big difference not only in calories and taste, but to our health.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Each year as many as 40,500 critically ill U.S. hospital patients die with an unknown medical condition that may have caused or contributed to their death, Johns Hopkins patient safety experts report in a recent study.
In a discussion of their findings, described online in BMJ Quality & Safety, researchers say that although diagnostic errors in the intensive care unit (ICU) may claim as many lives each year as breast cancer, they remain an underappreciated cause of preventable patient harm.
"Our study shows that misdiagnosis is alarmingly common in the acute care setting," says Bradford Winters, M.D., Ph.D., lead author and associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and neurology and surgery in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "To date, there's been very little research to determine root causes or effective interventions," Winters says, noting that less lethal patient safety risks have received greater attention.
By reviewing studies that used autopsy to detect diagnostic errors in adult ICU patients, the experts in the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality discovered that 28 percent of patients -- more than one in four -- had at least one missed diagnosis at death. In 8 percent of patients, the diagnostic error was serious enough that it may either have caused or directly contributed to the individual's death and, if known, likely would have changed treatment, researchers say. Infections and vascular maladies, such as heart attack and stroke, accounted for more than three-quarters of those fatal flaws.
Overall, the medical conditions most commonly missed by diagnosticians included heart attack; pulmonary embolism, an artery blockage in the lungs; pneumonia; and aspergillosis, a fungal infection that most commonly affects individuals with a weakened immune system. Cumulatively, these four conditions accounted for about one-third of all illnesses that doctors failed to detect.
Their review of 31 studies included 5,863 autopsies from a wide range of ICU types. The prevalence of autopsy-detected misdiagnoses, which were stratified by severity, ranged from 5.5 to 100 percent by study. Winters and his team categorized misdiagnoses based on four categories: vascular, which included conditions involving vessel blockages and bleeding, such as heart attack and stroke; all bacterial, viral and fungal infections; mechanical pathophysiological, a broad range of organ malfunction such as congestive heart failure and bowel obstruction; and cancer/other.
After collecting and classifying all error data, the researchers calculated how frequently misdiagnoses would be discovered if every patient who died in the ICU underwent an autopsy. Although autopsy is more frequently performed in complex patient cases in which the clinician may have a lower level of diagnostic certainty, the authors took this potential bias into account. Based on those adjustments, they say their calculations are conservative estimates.
Winters and his colleagues also found that, when compared with adult hospital patients overall, individuals in the ICU face up to a twofold risk of suffering a potentially fatal diagnostic mistake.
"It may be counterintuitive to think that the patients who are the most closely monitored and frequently tested are more commonly misdiagnosed, but the ICU is a very complex environment," Winters says. Clinicians face a deluge of information in a distracting environment in which the sickest patients compete for attention, most without being able to communicate with their medical team. "We need to develop better cognitive tools that can take into account the 7,000 or more pieces of information that critical care physicians are bombarded with each day to ensure we're not ruling out potential diagnoses," Winters says.
Although two-thirds of discovered misdiagnoses did not directly contribute to the patient's death, Winters says they're an important indicator of accuracy and aren't without costs. Patients may endure lengthened hospital stays, unnecessary surgical procedures and reduced quality of life because of non-fatal diagnostic mistakes, Winters adds.
The Armstrong Institute patient safety experts say the study points to the need for additional research to pinpoint the causes of misdiagnosis and identify tools to help diagnosticians more accurately assess patients.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has signed an ordinance extending the health care benefits of city employees to their domestic partners.
The Republican mayor tweeted Thursday he signed the ordinance that cleared the City-County Council last week.
Ballard had said that he preferred that the city offer benefits only to same-sex domestic partners because offering them to heterosexual partners might provide a disincentive to marry.
City officials have estimated that fewer than 30 of nearly 7,500 eligible workers would apply for the coverage. That would increase the city's health insurance costs by about $200,000, or less than 0.4 percent of the $58 million now spent.
Similar benefits are offered by other cities including Bloomington and Carmel; universities including Indiana, Purdue and Ball State; and private employers including Eli Lilly and Co.

Researchers from Rice University unveiled a new multi-antenna technology that could help wireless providers keep pace with the voracious demands of data-hungry smartphones and tablets. The technology aims to dramatically increase network capacity by allowing cell towers to simultaneously beam signals to more than a dozen customers on the same frequency.

Details about the new technology, dubbed Argos, were presented at the Association for Computing Machinery?s MobiCom 2012 wireless research conference in Istanbul. Argos is under development by researchers from Rice, Bell Labs and Yale University. A prototype built at Rice this year uses 64 antennas to allow a single wireless base station to communicate directly to 15 users simultaneously with narrowly focused directional beams.
Thanks to the growing popularity of smartphones and other data-hungry devices, the demand for mobile data is expected to grow 18-fold within the next five years. To meet demand, wireless carriers are scrambling to boost network capacity by installing more wireless base stations and shelling out billions of dollars for the rights to broadcast on additional frequencies.
In tests at Rice, Argos allowed a single base station to track and send highly directional beams to more than a dozen users on the same frequency at the same time. The upshot is that Argos could allow carriers to increase network capacity without acquiring more spectrum.
?The technical term for this is multi-user beamforming,? said Argos project co-leader Lin Zhong, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and of computer science at Rice. ?The key is to have many antennas, because the more antennas you have, the more users you can serve.?
Zhong said the theory for multi-user beamforming has been around for quite some time, but implementing technology has proven extremely difficult. Prior to Argos, labs struggled to roll out prototype test beds with a handful of antennas.
?There are all kinds of technical challenges related to synchronization, computational requirements, scaling up and wireless standards,? he said. ?People have really questioned whether this is practical, so it?s significant that we?ve been able to create a prototype that actually demonstrates that this works.?
Argos presents new techniques that allow the number of antennas on base stations to grow to unprecedented scales. The Argos prototype, which was built by Rice graduate student Clayton Shepard, uses an array of 64 antennas and off-the-shelf hardware ? including several dozen open-access test devices called WARP boards that were invented at Rice?s Center for Multimedia Communications. In tests, Argos was able to simultaneously beam signals to as many as 15 users on the same frequency. For wireless carriers, that performance would translate to more than a six-fold increase in network capacity. Zhong said the base-station design can be scaled up to work with hundreds of antennas and several dozen concurrent users, which would result in much higher capacity gains.
?There?s also a big payoff in energy savings,? Shepard said. ?The amount of power you need for transmission goes down in proportion to the number of antennas you have. So in Argos? case, we need only about one-sixty-fourth as much energy to serve those 15 users as you would need with a traditional antenna.?
Zhong and Shepard said Argos is at least five years away from being available on the commercial market. It would require new network hardware and a new generation of smartphones and tablets. It might also require changes in wireless standards. Those are big hurdles, but Zhong said the potential benefits of multi-user beamforming technology make it a very likely next big step for the wireless industry.
?The bandwidth crunch is here, and carriers need options,? Zhong said. ?They?re going to pay close attention to any new technologies that may allow them to serve more customers with fewer resources.?
