Divergent evolution illuminated: Light shed on reasons behind genome differences between species

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? A new study explains the divergent evolution of the genomes of different groups of species. The connection between the function of enzymes and the composition of the genomes shed light on the evolution and structure of genes, and explains differences between archaebacteria, bacteria and eukaryotes.

All living organisms on Earth are divided into three large domains: Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya, and from the beginning of life -more than 3,000 million years ago -, the genomes of each group have evolved towards distinct structures that have favored their separation. A study led by Llu?s Ribas de Pouplana, ICREA researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and head of the Gene Translation Laboratory, gives an explanation for the divergent evolution of the genomes of different groups of species. The connection between the function of enzymes and the composition of the genomes shed light on the evolution and structure of genes, and explains differences between archaebacteria, bacteria and eukaryotes.

The scientists have analyzed the distribution and abundance of transfer RNA genes -tRNA- (a key RNA for the translation of genes to proteins) in more than 500 species belonging to the three domains of life. They discovered that the structure of genomes was adapted to the activity of some enzymes, which differ for Bacteria and for Eukarya and are absent in Archaea.

The activity of these enzymes modifies tRNAs, allowing them to recognize up to three distinct codons. The activity of the bacterial and eukaryal enzymes is different, which explains why the genomes and the gene composition of bacteria, eukarya, and archaea have diverged. This discovery furthers our understanding of the relation between genome structure and the speed of protein synthesis from its genes. So, for example, as Ribas de Pouplana explains, "genes rich in codons that can be read by modified tRNAs have high expression levels. Or said the other way around, the greater the abundance of a protein in a cell the higher the number of triplets found in its gene sequence that can be read by modified tRNAs. Our findings contribute to the understanding of how the translation machinery works and explains why genomes for each group of species have a distinct codon composition."

This finding paves the way to many applications. One of these is in biotechnology as the discovery of the relevance of these modifications will allow an improvement in the industrial production of proteins: "We now have another parameter with which to optimize the synthesis of proteins from a gene," explains Eva Novoa, the first author of the article, who started her PhD studies in 2008 in Ribas' lab through the "la Caixa"/IRB Barcelona International PhD Programme in Biomedicine. "To give just one example, human insulin is "manufactured" in bacteria and our discovery would allow this production to be increased if we take into account the activity of these enzymes," says Novoa. The finding is also relevant for the study of cancer: "it is possible that these modification enzymes are over-represented in some kinds of cancer. In fact, this would be logical because cancer cells are highly efficient in producing proteins."

Published in Cell, the article demonstrates how organisms have evolved in a different manner to achieve better adaptations and to have optimum protein translation efficiency. "We don't exactly know why these enzymes appear or why they are different in bacteria and in eukaryotes but it's clear that they contribute to the separation of genomes of these two groups. The genetic code is the same but what has changed is the relative importance of different codons of the code. And this made the genome of these groups differentiate," concludes Ribas.

US Army tests robot that can jump 30 feet high

Developed by Boston Dynamics and Sandia National Labs, the Sand Flea reconnaissance robot can leap through a second-floor window.?

If you think that you might be safe from a robot uprising just because you live on the second floor, think again. A team of scientists have developed a reconnaissance robot that can jump 30 feet in the air and is precise enough to leap through a window two stories up. ?

Skip to next paragraph The 11-pound Sand Flea robot normally drives like a remote control car, but when it needs to, it can jump 30 feet into the air. An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings. Current development of Sand Flea is funded by the The US Army's Rapid Equipping Force.

Developed by Boston Dynamics, an engineering firm based in Waltham, Mass., with funding from?the Army's Rapid Equipping Force, the Sand Flea weighs 11 pounds and looks like a stripped-down RC car.?Before jumping, the Sand Flea stops, rears back, and then fires a piston that launches it into the air.

The piston is powered by a CO2 ?charge. The Sand Flea can jump 25 times before the charge needs to be replaced.

The Sand Flea is an updated version of the Precision Urban Hopper, which was developed by Sandia National Laboratories. The Sand Flea improves upon its predecessor with a gyroscopic?stabilization?system that keeps it oriented as it jumps, making for improved video in midflight.

The Sand Flea has been sent to?Army Test and Evaluation Command for?evaluation. CNET reports that, if it passes, the Army will ship nine of them to Afghanistan, where they will join the roughly 2,000 other robots currently deployed there.?

VerticalResponse Email Marketing Blog for Small Business: Cut the ...

IStock_000016422246XSmallFor any small business it's important to spend money where it?counts and eliminate unnecessary expenses. Besides looking at what cost drivers you can keep down, it's also important to remember the age-old saying, time is money. Often, finding ways to save time in your day to day operations is the quickest way to eliminating overhead. Looking at both unnecessary expenses and time-wasting endeavors, we've compiled a list of eight ways to save money and focus on growing your business.

1. Communicate Efficiently - We often waste time throughout the day on unnecessary meetings, long email chains or instant messenger conversations. 55% of communication is visual so determine the best mode of communication for a particular scenario in order to save time. Sometimes it's more appropriate to call or have a face-to-face conversation. Instant messaging is perfect for sharing links and asking quick questions, ?but when it comes to in-depth discussions or complicated explanations, sometimes it's best to pick up the phone or just walk over.

2. Meet When Necessary - Meetings are another mode of communication that tends to take more time/resources than necessary. Eliminate meetings that aren't vital and only include individuals whose input is essential. If you're finding yourself unable to get your work done throughout the day because of meetings consider instead a quick team huddle, an informational email with an attached report or a lunch or coffee walk (you gotta eat right?).

3. Go Green - Not only is it good for the environment but it can also save you supply and waste pick-up costs. Replace paper and plastic plates, cups and utensils with reusable ones. Save money on paper and printing by going paperless. Ditch the paper by sending email, signing contracts electronically, storing documents online, and taking notes on a white board or on your computer.

4. Reward Employees - Yes, we're telling you to spend more money on your employees. Happy employees stick around and work harder. Companies that have high turnover spend more money searching for, hiring, and training replacements. Give incentives for sticking around. These can be financial, of course, but something as simple as providing Monday bagels, lunch once a week or stocking the fridge with juice and soda can also improve morale around the office and boost loyalty. Investing in professional development is another way to keep employees and grow them as an asset.?Take a look at our post, 7 Tips for Recognizing Your Peeps, for more ideas.?

5. Negotiate - Sometimes saving money for your business is as simple as asking for a discount or asking to negotiate your rates. Talk to vendors and suppliers to let them know you're interested in being a long-term client. More often than not they'll adjust in the interest of developing a lasting relationship.

6. Hire Smart - Hire employees with multiple skills and strengths. Sometimes one mind is greater than two (and it'll cost your business less too). A few well-rounded employees can eliminate the need to hire many one-dimensional individuals who are only qualified to do specific tasks.

7. Look Around - Evaluate your needs. Do you need a larger or smaller office space? Do you need office space at all? Would it be more efficient to work from home? Evaluate your workspace and determine whether or not it fits your needs. Don't pay for more or even less than you need. Depending on the size and type of business you run, finding the right space to get the job done can make a huge impact on productivity.

8. Don't Do It Yourself - Did I mention time is money? You wouldn't spend hours, days, or months trying to re-roof your house or remodel your bathroom if you didn't have the skills to do so. It probably wouldn't turn out well and you most likely?wouldn't see the results you imagined. The same concept applies to your business. Don't spend hours trying to do your taxes or attempting to re-design your website. Sometimes it pays to hire an expert to do the job quicker and better than you can.

Every business has overhead they can't do without. Hopefully these tips will help eliminate or decrease extra spending and leave you with higher profit margins so you can put more money towards revenue generating activities.

Want more tips? Ask around. Colleagues, employees and friends often have great ideas on ways to cut costs. And, let us know what you learn!

Novatech Ultrabook range goes to nFinity, well, at least four

Image
Novatech has just put its own spin on the Ultrabook theme, outing its new nFinity line of svelte, 14-inch, portables. The base model is driven by an i3 chip, 2GB of RAM, and 64GB of SSD storage, for a £430 (about $687) asking price. If you want a little more pep, however, there are naturally i5 and i7 options too (£580 / $926 and £699 / $1,117 respectively), both of which get a RAM upgrade to 4GB, and double the SSD at 128GB. There are a few things which might dampen your purchasing flame, such as the lack of USB3.0, and perhaps the plastic finish. But when you're fully booted in the (claimed) 15 seconds, and still going 7 hours later, maybe that won't seem so bad a trade-off. The range lands on the 30th of this month, so not long to wait, or click on past the break for the promo video.

Canada, Thailand to explore free trade

BANGKOK -- ? Thailand rolled out the red carpet for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit with his Thai counterpart Friday.

Plenty of pomp surrounded the announcement as both countries have agreed to exploratory talks into a free trade deal.

Harper, who was flanked by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, called it a "tremendous opportunity" for Canada to become a "destination of choice for Thai business."

Officials celebrated the step forward with champagne -- Harper sipped white grape juice -- but Canada is still playing economic catch up in the region.

Harper is on his second sales pitch to Asia in as many months. He was in China in February and this six day trip includes stops in Thailand, Japan and South Korea.

The Conservatives see the booming Asia Pacific region as a key link in Canada's future prosperity.

But Canada lacks a real foothold in the region. Bilateral trade with Thailand is growing but was still a modest $3.5 billion in 2011.

We're also lagging behind competitors such as the United States, which just clinched a free-trade deal with South Korea.

Meanwhile, Canada's own trade talks with South Korea, launched in 2005, have stalled.

Japan, ? the world's third largest economy, ? and Canada have flirted with entering into trade talks for a few years but have so far only managed to complete a joint study looking into its possible economic benefits.

Harper defended his government's record.

"We've made it our business to get back into the game of trade negotiations," he said, pointing to nine free trade deals inked since the Tories took office in 2006.

Canada's energy resources could help leapfrog us ahead of the competition by helping service fuel thirsty emerging economies like those in the Asia Pacific.

"Our government believes it's essential that we be able to sell our energy products outside of North America to countries other than the United States," Harper said.

But that ambition rests of getting two pipeline projects ? Keystone XL and Northern Gateway ? that would carry Alberta crude to overseas markets.

Both projects are tied up in either Canadian or U.S. environmental reviews and their future is uncertain.

Harper reiterated that his government would be "taking the steps necessary" to speed regulatory decisions to ensure projects like those pipelines get built.

Former Google employee states why he now likes Microsoft

Earlier this month, former Microsoft and Google employee James Whittaker made waves on the Internet when he revealed why he left Google suddenly to rejoin Microsoft. Writing on his blog site, he stated that in his opinion, Google had changed in the time he worked there from a company dedicated to innovation to "an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus."

Now Whittaker has written yet another blog post that is basically the opposite side of his journey; namely, why he decided to rejoin Microsoft, this time as a web futurist.

So why come back to a big company like Microsoft, when a smaller organization could possibly be a bigger fit? Whittaker states that one of the reasons is having lots of talented people. He states:

The talent at big companies is abundant. That reason alone should explain anyone's choice?to work for any big company. Who doesn't want to be surrounded by smart people all day? That's why startups work so hard to hire big company talent away. That's why big companies create tugs-of-war over top performers, because they all have them.

He also says that big companies can have the scale to work on big problems and the reach to offer products across the globe.

Whittaker feels that Microsoft is making strides to use its talent, scale and reach " ... to be a disruptor. They aren't beholden to revenue streams or walled gardens. They stand to benefit the most from such a disruption."

While Whittaker says that not everything about Microsoft is perfect (meetings at the company can be too long and are held too often, according to him), he does see a number of changes at the company compared when he worked there last time. He states:

When I joined in 2006 the company was centered around Windows and Office. Today there is a new main street in Redmond and it houses the studios, not offices but studios, of the Xbox team. This change is more than symbolic. Windows and Office, far from sacrificial lambs, have clearly undergone some sort of genetic re-engineering. I have yet to fully grasp what they have done and how they have done it but their mojo is undeniable.

Keeping Your Business Secure with the Latest Technology

When it comes to small business technology, there is little doubt that business security systems have been keeping pace with the general advance of modern devices. From 24-hour monitoring to alerts sent to your smart phone

Why, then, are so many small companies still relying on archaic technology?

One nearby business, a lumber yard, leaves all its lights burning overnight, assuming that if the place is well lighted, it will keep burglars away. Aside from the waste of energy and high utility bills, this certainly wouldn?t stop a clever burglar from masquerading as an employee.

Even if you don?t keep lots of inventory around, enterprising (or desperate) thieves are inclined to take anything that isn?t nailed to the ground, which includes your computer servers, your monitors and just about any piece of small business technology worth selling. Some businesses have even been broken into for the express purpose of stealing copper pipe and copper wire. And while insurance may cover some or most of your loss, the interruption to your company?s operations can have serious repercussions.

So now you?re wondering which technology to employ in your business security system. The appropriate tools vary, depending on the business. As a general guideline, however, here are the basics of what you might consider:

*??????? Automated lighting ? illuminates areas when you need it, plus helps the premises look occupied to casual observers.

*??????? Intrusion detection ? making sure access points to your property are monitored so that unauthorized entry is detected.

*??????? Motion sensors ? the newest motion detectors have smarter technology aimed at preventing false positives while still alerting you to unwanted visitors.

*??????? Video surveillance ? the ability to observe who is coming and going during the business day and after hours.

*??????? Access control ? ensuring that secure areas can only be entered by those who have authorization to be there.

A good business security system can reduce your insurance rates by a significant amount ? in some cases as much as 20 percent! That?s not only added peace of mind, but money in your pocket, as well.

Just as small business technology has advanced the tools used in company operations, it has also improved our ability to safeguard our investments and ourselves. The automated business security systems that are now available are not only more affordable than ever, but may prove to be a very wise investment.

Santorum Tells Supporters to 'Saddle Up Like Reagan Did'

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Despite suffering a double-digit loss In Illinois to Mitt Romney tonight, Rick Santorum pointed to the delegates he will gain in the night's primary as being the catalyst to boost his quest for the Republican presidential nomination and told his? supporters to? "saddle up like Reagan did in the cowboy movies."

"We had really no expectations of winning Illinois, but we're going to come away with a lot of delegates, which is going to keep us in the hunt," Santorum said during an impromptu speech at his primary night event. Santorum later noted in his official speech that he won the areas of Illinois that "conservatives and Republicans populate" and predicted he would net between 15 and 20 delegates from the night's primary.

"It wasn't a tough night, we did very well," he told reporters after his official primary night speech. "We picked up a lot of delegates tonight in a very tough state. One that no one had any expectations for us to win in. We did what we had to do. We got the delegates that we could get and you know, we're feeling good, again, it's very clear, it's a two-person race, and now we need to get all the conservatives to line up behind us."

In a 15-minute speech to a ballroom filled with more than 700 people, Santorum looked ahead to Louisiana, where he heads Wednesday and Friday, as well as Pennsylvania, his home state, where he asked supporters to "saddle up?like Reagan did in the cowboy movies" and help him in the next "five weeks for a big win and a big delegate sweep."

Santorum stressed that he is the lone candidate who can provide the "contrast" to Barack Obama in the race while tying Romney to the president for adopting similar healthcare plans.

"There is one candidate in this race who can make that contrast with the current occupant of the White House. There is someone in this race who has all of that, someone who has the track record of being for you, being for solutions that empower people, being for limited government. Someone who can fight the biggest issues of the day, whether 'Romneycare' or 'Obamacare,' they're interchangeable."

Santorum said he called Romney before his speech to congratulate him on his win and even joked with the crowd that Romney has decided to incorporate Santorum's message of freedom into his own speeches.

"I was pleased to hear before I came out that Governor Romney has adopted that theme in his speech tonight," he said. "I am glad we are moving the debate here in the Republican party."

Speaking across the street from where Abraham Lincoln finished the Gettysburg Address, Santorum shared with the crowd that he developed his appreciation for freedom while growing up in Pennsylvania.

"I learned everything, everything about freedom and opportunity and hard work from growing up with folks who worked in the mills and the mines in Western Pennsylvania," Santorum said.

Santorum delivered two impromptu speeches to overflow crowds in the hallway outside the ballroom tonight. During one of the speeches, a man yelled out to the former Pennsylvania Senator, who is a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, "Marry me Rick!"

The crowd cheered and Santorum turned to the man with a grin on his face and clasped his hands together.

It was unclear if the man was a heckler trying to make a point out of Santorum's position on same-sex marriage or if he simply was trying to spread conservative love.

The Top 5: Forgotten Heroes and Heroines | Video Games, Reviews ...

Guardian of Earth

The stars of videogames perform heroic acts on a daily basis. Whether saving princesses, planets, or whole galaxies, nothing is beyond these guys. The various exploits of Mario, Link and many other big names are so well known that it hardly seems worth bringing clich?s up again.?What I?ve tried to do here is play with the definition of ?hero? so as to be able to include some more unlikely candidates, and bring others into the limelight.

5. First Mate Rana- 1000 Tiny Claws

When a ragtag gang of pirates unleashes an ancient curse, who is sent in alone to crush the resulting monsters and reverse the damage? Rana, the only woman on the ship and clearly a braver soul than any of the men. When the captain begins to feel guilty and tries to take over this duty, she lashes him to the ship to save him the burden of taking over. Yay for girl power, which apparently allows them to destroy hordes of gigantic insects singlehandedly.

4. The Prince- Prince of Persia series

Largely for the constant feats of death-defying acrobatics that make up his games. As Sands of Time showed, he possesses a magical dagger allowing time to be rewound. Impaled on that sheet of spikes while running across a wall? Simply rewind, and give it another try. Missed that narrow pole and plummeted a few hundred feet off a cliff? Same deal. Does this effect cancel out the pain caused to the Prince by each mistake? How do we know he doesn?t continue to feel each impact throughout the game? Having the determination to return to the scene of a painful failure, with a lesson learned, is certainly heroic in my book. The noble causes he happens to be serving at the time are a plus too.

3. Susumu Hori- Mr Driller series

Ridiculous as this is, it needs to be said. Susumu is the star of this oddball puzzle series. Though he may dress like someone?s worst cosplay nightmare, he?s one valiant little dude. He digs ever downwards, drilling through endless colourful blocks on his way to that tantalisingly distant goal. What compels him to do this, and risk the twin dangers of running out of air and being crushed by falling blocks? The concept of higher scores are nothing to Susumu. He risks his life continually, purely for the player. Because he loves us. Bless the little pink freak.

Susumu Mr Driller

Camp isn't the word. 'Incredibly camp' is close, but that's two words.

2. Red (or whatever you chose to name him/her)- Pok?mon series

Sure, Pok?mon has been recycling the same basic plot since it was established by Red and Blue. This doesn?t affect the quality of the games, nor does it detract from the protagonist?s achievement. This is a young child, who had almost no Pok?-knowledge at all. They decide to set off on their own, starting entirely from scratch, on a journey to become world champion. The ambition alone is admirable enough, but most importantly: they?re actually successful. Taming enormous beasts and being accepted as master by a being as powerful as Mewtwo? When you?re too young to really be allowed out on your own in the first place? Impressive stuff, I?d say.

1. Guardian of Earth- Who?s That Flying

The greatest hero in the history of Playstation Minis. The Guardian of Earth is an immensely powerful being, sworn to protect mere humans. Each planet has one, but none are as effortlessly cool as ours. He showboats for magazine covers. He poses gleefully for paparazzi. He defeats an entire cosmos full of generally unpleasant invaders singlehandedly. He shoeboats some more.
What a guy.

When one hybrid is more equal than another

By Dan Carney, msnbc.com contributor

Consumers understand some basic calculus when shopping for cars.?Used to be that Japanese > domestic, but these days it is more like Japanese ~ domestic.

But doesn?t hybrid = hybrid?? And surely BMW > Chevrolet, right?

Well no, actually.?

There are different kinds of hybrids, but one broadly safe generalization is that there are strong hybrids that have big batteries and strong electric motors and there are mild hybrids which offer little more than automatic engine stop/start for improved fuel economy in urban driving.

Chevrolet made the mistake a few years back of branding the Malibu mild hybrid as a hybrid, leading to disappointed customers who thought it would be a Prius-like system.? It wasn?t and to prevent such confusion Chevy now calls its mild hybrid model the Malibu Eco.

This is likely to be the way of most conventional internal combustion-powered cars in the not-too-distant future; the gas engines will stop and start automatically and there may be a bit of electric regeneration under braking and some mild assist during acceleration, but they will effectively be conventional gas cars.

BMW is following this road map, and as part of its increasing efficiency, the company has substituted a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder for its trademark inline-six cylinder engines in the new 528 and 328 models.? The Bavarians figure that drivers of the Ultimate Driving Machine will willingly swap some of the six?s signature smoothness and sound for more power and better gas milage.

They may be right, but that straight-six sound was one of the reasons to select BMW over its increasingly good alternatives.

Additionally, BMW has bolstered the four-cylinder?s frugality with an automatic stop/start system that avoids gas wasted idling at lights.? It is a sound concept embraced by more new models every year and the idea has been around long enough now that customers are familiar with it and comfortable with the notion.

Except that BMW hasn?t executed this basic technology with any finesse.?? I first drove a stop/start-equipped car more than a decade ago at the proving ground of one of the electrical supplier companies that make starters and alternators for the car companies.

Telling people about the technology afterward, they were always skeptical: Isn?t it intrusive, having the engine stop and then having the starter crank it back up again all the time?? Won?t that wear out the starter?

No, silly, they wouldn?t be foolish enough to do stop/start with a regular starter: They do it with a special starter that doesn?t clank into engagement with the flywheel.? The strong hybrids have an electric motor starter built into the flywheel. ?Mild ones like the Chevy use a souped up alternator that is connected to the engine with a belt.

But now comes BMW, with the nerve to do exactly what customers feared all along. They actually expect drivers to tolerate a conventional starter clanking into engagement and then cranking the engine up.

Unlike the seamless Chevy, which starts and stops unnoticeably, the BMW?s engine shudders to a stop, just like the one in your regular car.?? You don?t really notice or care that your car does that because it only does it when you are finished driving, not at every red light.? When stopped, the Malibu Eco?s tachometer drops to 0 rpm, but that?s the only indication the engine has stopped.

On startup, the Malibu?s engine almost magically starts running like it never stopped in the time that it takes the driver?s foot to get from the brake to the gas. ?The BMW makes the strained sounds of the starter churning the engine back to life, and it shudders as it regains the fire.

And get this: BMW uses conventional engine-driven hydraulic power steering.? That means the steering wheel goes heavy and dead in your hands at a stop.? Trying to turn the wheel a bit to prepare for a turn after the stop brings the surprise that the steering doesn?t seem to work.

Force it and the engine groans back to life annoyingly.?The Chevy has electric power steering, which is much maligned for its typical lack of steering feel on cars whose software hasn?t been sufficiently tuned.? But it is a godsend in the Malibu in comparison to BMW?s ham-handed application of hydraulic steering to a car whose engine periodically stops running.

It is no accident that the Malibu?s stop/start procedure is seamless, explained Stephen Poulos, global chief engineer for General Motor?s stop/start technology.? The belt-driven electric motor brings the engine to life in less than one full rotation so it just springs to life.? When stopping, the same motor works to dampen any vibrations from the stopping engine.? It also halts its spinning in one rotation, while the BMW in contrast chugs on for a couple dying spins before its melodramatic silent-film death.

Chevy?s engine management computer also uses the throttle to assist a smooth stop, and stops the engine so precisely that it is in the best position for a quick, smooth restart.? BMW?s, umm, doesn?t.

So its worth noting that some carmakers are doing their homework, while others are counting on the idea that the teacher won?t check theirs based on their reputations as model students.? I checked and BMW gets an F for this one.? Time for them to head to study hall for some remedial work to make BMW = Chevy.
